In my master’s thesis project, I developed a strategic board game called “Blobs & Clouds,” and the Level 2 Defensive Blob is one of three possible evolutions that a Level 1 Blob can undergo. This evolution is triggered when a Level 1 Blob moves onto a designated evolution field on the game board.
The Defensive Blob is designed for strategic protection-its primary role is to defend key positions and safeguard the player’s Ur-Cloud. To visually communicate this defensive function, I incorporated a large stone structure on its head, giving it a more grounded, resilient appearance. Like all Level 2 evolutions, it features a single eye, which not only distinguishes it from the eyeless Level 1 Blobs but also represents its evolved awareness and presence on the battlefield.
I sculpted the character in ZBrush, maintaining the organic softness of the original Blob while adding bulk and mass to emphasize its protective nature. Retopology and UV mapping were done in Maya, and the texturing was completed in Substance Painter using a hand-painted style. The color palette ties into the game’s board design, which is made up of contrasting light and dark cloud fields-ensuring a unified and immersive visual language.
The Defensive Blob is part of a full set of evolution options that allow players to shape their strategy dynamically. It adds a layer of tactical depth to Blobs & Clouds, enabling more robust defensive playstyles.
